At this moment you’re feeling quite relieve. The verdict is in, and the pathologists delivered a ruling of ‘no cancer’. But whatever is contributing to elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, may not cause prostate cancer. Now it’s your job to make sure that it doesn’t.
Prostate cancer is cause by two conditions that effect normal functioning of the prostate gland.
- Benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH.
- Inflammation or infection of the prostate, or prostatitis.
Either of these conditions cause elevated prostate specific antigen level, which led your urologist to suspect you may have prostate cancer.
BPH is treated with drugs. If there is a bacterial infection in the prostate, this can also be treated with drugs. The urologist will monitor your prostate health with digital rectal exams, and PSA tests.
Your job is to maintain overall excellent health to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. There may be other factors beyond your control, which may increase the risk. But if you follow these simple guidelines, you may help reduce the risk.
- A balanced low-fat diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables containing lycopene – tomatoes, grapefruits, watermelons.
- Reduce physical and mental stress. Sleep for 8 hours every night. Exercise regularly, and adopt only those activities that induce relaxation.
- Reduce alcohol consumption, and quit smoking.
- Report any changes, no matter how insignificant, to your doctor.
- Never miss any scheduled follow-up exams.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart as I have had BPH for a number or years. I get a digital rectal exam (if it’s digital, how come it’s not done with a computer?) every six months as I have also had prostatitis. I support everything said in this post but do have a couple of caveats. First, if your blood pressure is on the low side, be careful about taking drugs like FlowMax. I took it for a couple of months until one day, I got out of bed, stood up and fell over I was so dizzy and dizzyness is a published side effect of any prostate drug that is an alpha blocker. Second, PSA tests are known to sometimes come back with false positive readings, so even if you your doc says you have an elevated PSA, don’t panic. Trust the digital exam and get another PSA in like six months. Or, if you want to be really safe, see a urologist.
Hello All,

My friends father died of Asbestos related illness and cancer. I inspired me to delve into the available research and information on how these terrible events might be avoided or life extended.
From what i have read of the published medical data and research, particularly that conducted in China and Japan there is a great deal of evidence to support complimentary immune therapy, especially with infections and cancer. I’ve been following with some interest the development of a complimentary cancer treatment that has been designed in liason with the University of Newcastle (Australia) and although a somewhat different approach to the above outlined treatment the concept and the deliberate and effective use of natural elements in the product are similar. If you have an interest in this field or perhaps just want to keep abreast of a new treatment you may find http://www.mc-s.com.au fairly worthwhile reviewing.
I am 63 1/2 years old. I am 5’10″ and weigh 187 pounds. I excersise almost every day. Walk 2-3 miles, lift weights every other day, ride a road bike 10 miles approx 3-4 days per week. Non smoker, watch my diet, and drink seldom. No trouble with uruination.
The VA hospital does my physicals, PSA has slowly risen over time to now 4.1. The VA urologist says my prostate is smooth, not enlarged and during the first visit put me on an antibiotic in case the elevated PSA was infection…retake is still 4.1 and now he wants to do a needle biopsy.
Question…in your opinion should I have it done or get another opinion?
My personal opinion is that you should do both. You should explore every means of acquiring additional information about your prostate health. That’s what makes second opinions so very important to adult males over fifty.
Prostate biopsy is absolutely crucial, because PSA testing can produce false/positive results. And that’s why experts in the field believe it’s possible to have prostate cancer with a PSA within normal range.
When it comes to prostate cancer diagnosis, you could get the feeling that you’re still living in the sixteenth century, rather than the twenty-first century. The notion of punching holes into the prostate gland, and digital testing seem antiquated. But maintaining adequate prostate health depends on going through the process. In the near future a saliva test may be all that is required.
I would definitely have every test I could get done by the VA and do it every six months in my opinion.. I was perfectly healthy in December 2007, my psa was 3.0 when I went in for a urology check up (from November 2006) in January 2008 my psa jumped to 6.7… now have gleason score of 8 and radical surgery done March 25th.. Had I known the true psa is lower than 3, and a ultra sound is not uncommon, and to request a biopsy back in 2006 I probably would not be in this situation .
good luck..
